Schengen visa, passport age, EES registration, cash declaration and emergency number: everything you need to clarify before your trip to Spain, on one page.
The first rule to know before traveling to Spain is this: Turkish citizens need a Schengen visa. The permitted stay is 90 days / 180 days, the visa fee is €90, and the processing time is 15-21 business days. The age of your passport, the Entry/Exit System at the border, and cash declaration should also be clarified before you set off.
In brief
- A Schengen visa is required for Turkish citizens; the maroon (ordinary) passport does not provide an exemption.
- If your passport is older than 10 years, your application will not be accepted; renew your passport first.
- Do not book non-refundable tickets or hotel reservations before the visa is issued; apply early.
- A customs declaration is required for 10,000 Euros or the equivalent in cash or other means of payment.
- There is EES registration on entry; leave buffer time for connections and on return.

Visa: the essence of the rule
Turkish citizens cannot enter Spain without a visa. The required document is the Schengen visa. This information was verified from an official source on 2026-08-01. Check the Spain visa page for current requirements.
Key figures:
- Permitted stay: 90 days / 180 days
- Processing time: 15-21 business days
- Visa fee: €90
The 90/180 rule means this: you can stay in the Schengen Area for a total of 90 days within any 180-day period. This period covers not only Spain but also stays in all Schengen countries. If you move on to Portugal or France after Spain, the days are deducted from the same counter.
The processing time is the interval from the receipt of the application to the result; appointment waiting time may be added separately. Therefore, calculate your visa timeline before purchasing non-refundable tickets and accommodation. Fees and durations may be updated; check again on the day of application.
Passport: type and age rule
Your passport is the basis of the visa application, and mistakes are commonly seen in two points.
- Holders of an ordinary (maroon) passport are subject to a visa upon entry to Spain. The maroon passport does not provide visa exemption.
- Schengen countries, including Spain, do not accept visa applications made with a passport older than 10 years.
The second rule surprises most people. Even if your passport's validity has not expired, if it is older than 10 years, the application will not be accepted. Check the age of your passport before applying; if you need to renew it, make this the first step, because the renewal process may delay your visa timeline.
For the remaining validity period of the passport and the blank page requirement, check the current instructions of the application center; we do not give figures in this article. Also verify that the name on your ticket is written exactly the same as on your passport. A letter mismatch can cause problems at the airport. For ticket-related steps, you can check our online check-in guide.
At the border: Entry/Exit System (EES)
The Entry/Exit System (EES) has been fully operational at all external borders of the Schengen Area since 10 April 2026. You will encounter this system when entering Spain by airport.
In practice, expect the following:
- The border officer will scan your passport and your entry will be recorded in the system.
- An additional registration step may be required on first entry; queue time varies by airport and time.
- Your stay duration can be tracked through the records, so take overstaying seriously.
Do not keep connection times too short on connecting flights. Waiting times may be longer during busy hours at border control.
Do not schedule your return flight on the very last day of your permitted stay. It is safer to leave a buffer day in case of delay or cancellation. Check your airline's and the airport's current announcements for details of the registration process.
Cash, customs and emergency
Anyone bringing into or taking out of Spain 10,000 Euros or the equivalent in cash or other means of payment must submit a declaration to Spanish Customs. When calculating the amount you are carrying, take into account not only banknotes but also other means of payment. If you are carrying an amount close to the threshold, clarify the declaration conditions with the customs authority in advance.```continuing```
It is safer to make card payment your main method. If you are carrying cash, distribute some in your suitcase and some on your person.
Contact in case of emergency
The Republic of Türkiye Madrid Embassy's duty/emergency phone number is +34 629476693. Call this line in cases such as passport loss, serious accident or detention. Save the number on your phone and also write it on paper; if your phone is stolen, the paper copy will come in handy.
Store a photocopy or photo of your passport and ticket in the cloud. Check the application center's current list to see whether insurance and accommodation documents are required in the application file.
Choosing a route: where to go, how many days
Spain is too wide to finish in one trip; you need to choose a region. Our editorial suggestion: do not cover more than two regions on a short trip.
Madrid
The capital is toured on foot with its museums and squares. Allocate at least 2 days.
Barcelona
Coast, architecture and city life together. Allocate at least 2 days for here as well.
Andalusia
Seville, Granada and the area around Malaga stand out with their Islamic architectural heritage. Transitions between cities take time; focus your route on this region. For details, see our Andalusia route article.
If you are looking for a ready-made program, the Elegant Spain & Andalusia 7 Nights 8 Days MAD-BCN tour is on sale with Pegasus Airlines as 7 nights 8 days; see the tour page for flight and program details. As an option focused on Andalusia, there is the Super Promo Andalusia Tour (AGP-SVQ); duration and program are on the tour page. If you want to combine it with Portugal, check the Portugal & Spain Andalusia tour with direct flight from Izmir. For a sea option, there is the MSC Seaview Balearic Islands & Western Mediterranean tour. The full list is on the Spain tours page. Joining a tour does not remove the visa requirement; the visa rules remain the same.

Step by step: from application to flight
Keeping the order saves time.
- Check your passport. A maroon passport does not provide visa exemption; renew your passport if it is older than 10 years.
- Determine the date. It is recommended to apply for the visa as early as possible, for example a month in advance. The processing time is 15-21 business days, and appointment waiting is added separately.
- Prepare the application file. Get the current document list from the Spain visa page and the application center. The fee is €90.
- Get an appointment and apply. Make sure the documents are complete and consistent with your passport.
- Wait for the result. Do not purchase non-refundable tickets and hotels before the visa is approved.
- Finalize your reservations once the visa is issued. Flight, accommodation and insurance dates must match the visa dates.
- Check in before the flight. Keep your passport and visa printout with you.
- Be ready for EES registration upon entry. Allow margin for connections and queues.
After your visa is issued, track your own number of stay days according to the 90/180 rule.
