THY ticket refunds and changes depend on the purchase channel, ticket class, and time remaining before departure. Rules, exceptions, and steps on one page.

A Turkish Airlines ticket is refunded conditionally: a ticket purchased from the website or mobile app with at least 168 hours remaining before departure can be refunded in full within 24 hours of purchase. Beyond this, THY ticket refund and change rules vary according to ticket class, purchase channel, and payment method.

In brief

  • The 24-hour free refund applies only to unused tickets purchased via the website or app, with more than 168 hours remaining before departure.
  • Tickets that have been changed, affected by disruption, or purchased with "Freeze the Fare" are excluded from the free refund.
  • Tickets bought through an agency, call centre, or sales office cannot be managed online; call the call centre or visit a sales office. Only tickets purchased in TRY from Turkey sales offices can be refunded online via the "Manage Booking" page; changes and cancellations are not included in this exception.
  • Refunds are made according to the payment method used when purchasing the ticket; additional services are not covered by the free refund.

The 24-hour conditional free refund rule

For a ticket purchased from THY's website or mobile app, the free refund window is 24 hours after purchase. If you request a refund within this period, you receive the full amount paid back.

This right depends on two conditions:

  • The flight must be at least 7 days away.
  • The ticket must have been purchased from the THY website or mobile app.

The time calculation is done in hours. If less than 168 hours remain before departure at the moment you submit the refund request, the 24-hour right does not apply. In other words, check the 7-day limit by counting hours backward from the departure time, not by counting days. For a flight departing Monday at 18:00, a request submitted after the previous Monday at 18:00 falls outside the limit.

This right applies only to unused tickets. If you change your mind after purchasing, the first step is to use this window. You can use the search for flight tickets page to compare alternative flights.

Situations where the 24-hour refund does not apply

Even if you are within the free refund window, some tickets are excluded. The 24-hour refund right does not apply in these cases:

  • Tickets that have previously been changed.
  • Tickets affected by flight disruption.
  • Tickets issued with the "Freeze the Fare" option.
  • Used tickets; the right applies only to unused tickets.

Additional services

Additional services attached to the ticket, such as seat selection and pet transport, are also not covered by the 24-hour free refund. Check on screen how the cost of these services is handled during the transaction.

Common mistake

The most common mistake is remembering the right as simply "24 hours" and forgetting the time remaining before the flight. If less than 168 hours remain before departure, the right does not apply even if 24 hours have not yet passed since purchase. The second mistake is trying to change the ticket first and then get a free refund; a changed ticket loses this right. For this reason, make sure you have definitely decided to cancel before making a date change.

Domestic change penalties

The change fee is determined according to the ticket class and the time remaining before departure. The amounts below apply to domestic tickets.

EcoFly (classes B-Q)

  • 1-12 hours before departure: TRY 1,350 change penalty.
  • 12 hours or more before departure: TRY 1,100 change penalty.
  • If there is a fare difference for the new date, it is charged separately.
  • No changes are allowed in classes T-F.

ExtraFly

  • 1-12 hours before departure: TRY 600 change penalty.
  • More than 12 hours before departure: TRY 350 change penalty.
  • A ticketing service fee is also charged.

These amounts are penalty items; if the price of the new flight is different, the difference is calculated separately. View the total cost on screen before confirming the transaction. Also compare the refund option instead of changing: in some cases, buying a new ticket may make more sense than paying the penalty and fare difference. For change fees on international tickets, check the fare conditions in your reservation.

Purchase channel and payment method

How the refund is processed is determined by where the ticket was purchased.

  • Tickets purchased from the website or mobile app are managed through online channels.
  • Tickets purchased through channels such as a sales office, call centre, or agency cannot be cancelled, refunded, or changed through online channels. You need to call the call centre or visit a THY sales office.
  • Tickets where the first travel segment has already been used also cannot be processed online; a call centre or sales office is required.

Tickets purchased in TRY from a Turkey sales office

There is one exception to this rule: refunds for tickets purchased in TRY from Turkey sales offices can be done online via the "Manage Booking" page. You need to attach an ID or passport image during the request. Preparing the image in advance shortens the process.

Return of payment

Ticket refunds are made according to the payment method used when purchasing the ticket. The refund is made according to your payment method; check the details during the refund process and in THY's current conditions. If you are planning a trip where a visa application could be rejected, read the options in the article what to do after a visa rejection before purchasing a ticket.

Miles&Smiles award tickets

Award tickets work differently from paid tickets. Two rules should be known.

No-show

For a Miles&Smiles award ticket, if you do not show up for the flight, the re-issuance fee is TRY 1,050 for domestic flights and USD 170 for international flights. If you are going to cancel your flight, taking action before departure is less risky than not showing up.

Date or route change

For award tickets, a date or route change can be made within one year from the date the ticket was first issued, with an additional fee per transaction. The one-year period starts from the day the ticket was first issued, not from the flight date. This distinction is important for trips planned well in advance: if you purchased the ticket far ahead of time, your change right may expire before the day of the flight arrives.

If you are going to use an award ticket, do not make changes before finalizing your outbound and return dates. Since the additional fee is charged for each transaction, multiple changes multiply the cost. Check the transaction screen in your account regarding the refund of mileage balance.

Step by step: how to request a refund or change

  1. Determine the purchase channel. If it's the website or app, manage it online. If it's a sales office, call centre, or agency, online processing is not possible; call the call centre or visit a THY sales office. If you purchased it in TRY from a Turkey sales office, an online refund is possible via "Manage Booking."
  2. Calculate the time remaining before departure in hours. If it's under 168 hours, there is no 24-hour free refund.
  3. Check the purchase time. If 24 hours have passed, check the refund and change conditions for your ticket class.
  4. Check the status of the ticket. A ticket that has previously been changed, affected by disruption, or purchased with "Freeze the Fare" is not eligible for the free refund.
  5. Go to the "Manage Booking" page (only for tickets purchased via website or app, and for refunds of tickets purchased in TRY from a Turkey sales office). This page does not apply to agency, call centre, or other sales office tickets; call the call centre or visit a sales office.
  6. Upload documents if required. For the online refund of tickets purchased in TRY from a Turkey sales office, an ID or passport image is requested.
  7. View the amount before confirming. Penalty, fare difference, service fee, and additional service fees are separate line items.
  8. Keep the confirmation email. Since the refund is made according to the payment method, also track your bank transaction.

If you experienced a delay or cancellation, remember that tickets affected by disruption are not covered by the 24-hour free refund; in this case, ask THY's call centre or sales office about current processing options.

Pre-departure checklist

Review the following items before purchasing the ticket and immediately after:

  • Did you purchase the ticket from the website or app? The free refund applies only to this channel.
  • Did you note the purchase time and departure time? Use these to calculate the 24-hour and 168-hour limits.
  • Does your ticket class (EcoFly B-Q, T-F, or ExtraFly) allow changes?
  • Have you seen the total of the change penalty, fare difference, and service fee?
  • If you purchased an additional service such as seat selection or pet transport, do you know these are excluded from the free refund?
  • Do you remember the payment method? The refund is made according to the payment method.
  • Is your passport or ID image ready? It may be needed for an online refund request.
  • If the route requires a visa, did you avoid buying a non-refundable ticket before the visa result came out?
  • If you used an award ticket, did you check the one-year change period starting from the date the ticket was first issued?

If the answer to any item on the list is unclear, open the fare conditions in your reservation or contact THY's call centre before proceeding. Since rules may change, check THY's current conditions.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a free refund after purchasing a THY ticket?

Yes, but it's conditional. If the flight is at least 7 days away and you purchased the ticket from the THY website or mobile app, you can get a full refund within 24 hours of purchase. The ticket must be unused.

Does the 24-hour free refund apply if departure is less than 7 days away?

No. The period is calculated in hours, and if less than 168 hours remain before departure at the moment of the refund request, the free refund right does not apply. In this case, you need to check the normal refund and change conditions for your ticket class.

Can I cancel online a ticket I purchased from an agency or call centre?

No. Tickets purchased through channels such as a sales office, call centre, or agency cannot be cancelled, refunded, or changed through online channels. You need to call the call centre or visit a THY sales office. However, refunds for tickets purchased in TRY from a Turkey sales office can be done online via the "Manage Booking" page.

How much does a date change cost on a THY domestic ticket?

In EcoFly classes B-Q, the penalty is TRY 1,100 if 12 hours or more remain before departure, and TRY 1,350 if 1-12 hours remain; no changes are allowed in classes T-F. In ExtraFly, the penalty is TRY 350 if more than 12 hours remain and TRY 600 if 1-12 hours remain, plus a ticketing service fee. If there is a fare difference, it is charged separately.

To which account is a THY ticket refund made?

The refund is made to the payment method you used when purchasing the ticket. Check THY's current conditions during the refund process for details.

What happens if I don't show up for a Miles&Smiles award ticket flight?

In the case of a no-show, the re-issuance fee is TRY 1,050 for domestic flights and USD 170 for international flights. A date or route change can be made within one year from the date the ticket was first issued, with an additional fee per transaction.
