What is the exit fee for travel abroad?
The exit fee for travel abroad is a fee charged per departure from Turkish citizens leaving the country. In other words, the amount is not paid once a year but separately for every trip abroad. A two-day city break and a two-week tour are both subject to the same rule.
The fee must be paid before leaving the country. Checks are carried out by police officers on duty at the exit gates; at this stage it is verified whether the fee has been paid or whether an exemption applies. If you cannot prove that you made the payment or it does not appear in the system, you will lose time at departure. In the worst case, this could mean missing your flight.
For this reason, think of the fee not as an airport surprise but as a fixed item in your travel budget. While looking at ticket prices, compare your options on the search flight tickets page, and note the fee as a separate item. The fee is an obligation independent of ticket and visa fees; paying one does not substitute for the other.
2026 amount and the status of old stamps
The amount of the fee is 1,250 TL as of 1 January 2026. The amount was raised from 1,000 TL to 1,250 TL by a communiqué published in the Official Gazette No. 33124 (5th Repeated) dated 31.12.2025, and entered into force on 01.01.2026.
Exit fee stamps purchased at the old amount
Exit fee stamps purchased at the end-2025 amount of 1,000 TL can be used for departures until the end of 10 January 2026. No supplementary payment is required for these; that is, you do not need to pay the difference separately. For departures after 10 January 2026, the current amount applies.
Where should you verify the amount?
Fee amounts may change due to revaluation and communiqués. Before your trip, check the amount shown on the payment screen in the Digital Tax Office or your bank application. The figure shown on the screen is binding for you. Do not rely on old amounts on third-party sites; especially at the start of the year, many pages may continue to show the old figure without being updated.
How is the fee paid? Payment channels
The fee must be paid before leaving the country. There are two main routes: physical payment points and electronic channels.
Physical points
It can be deposited against a receipt at tax offices, treasury directorates, customs accounting offices, provincial treasury accounting directorates, authorized banks, and PTT cash desks. Keep the receipt with you throughout your trip.
Electronic channels
The fee can also be paid through the following:
- GİB Digital Tax Office
- GİB mobile application
- Internet and mobile banking applications of authorized banks
For payments made through these channels, the fee is checked through the system in which it was paid; when departure occurs, it is also recorded in the system used. In other words, in most cases you do not need to carry a paper document. Still, saving a screenshot of the payment confirmation screen or the receipt on your phone will make things easier in case of a possible system issue.
The most practical method is to pay via the application a day before you set off, or before leaving home. This way you avoid dealing with queues and connection issues at the airport.
Payment at airports: İzmir and Ankara
Payment can also be made at the airport, but the available options vary by airport. The printed exit fee stamp application ended as of 1 January 2025; do not look for a stamp.
İzmir Adnan Menderes
According to İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport, the payment points are as follows: Digital Tax Office, GİB Mobile Application, internet and mobile branches of contracted banks, cash desks and ATMs, PTT, tax offices, and airport cash desks and kiosks.
Ankara Esenboğa
At Ankara Esenboğa Airport, in addition to the channels above, payment can also be made at the Vakıf Bank branch on the arrivals floor.
Other airports
We cannot verify the arrangement of cash desks and kiosks at other airports on this page; check the official announcements of the airport you are travelling to. The general recommendation remains the same: pay in advance from your phone instead of queuing at the airport. By the time you reach the terminal, check-in, baggage, and security already take time. For check-in times, you can check our online check-in guide.
Exemptions, refunds and common mistakes
Whether the fee has been paid or an exemption applies is checked at the exit gate. If you think you fall within the scope of an exemption, bring documents proving your situation with you and confirm the scope with the relevant tax office before departure.
Refund
A refund is made in two cases:
- The fee has been paid but travel abroad has not taken place
- The fee has been collected from a person who is exempt
Refund applications can also be made electronically through the Digital Tax Office. If your flight was cancelled or you gave up on the trip, keep the payment and the receipt.
Common mistakes
- Thinking the fee is a one-time payment for the year; it is paid separately for each departure.
- Looking for a printed exit fee stamp; the application has ended.
- Paying at the old amount; check the current amount shown on the screen.
- Leaving the payment to the last minute and having connection or queue issues at the airport.
- Paying twice for the same departure; check the receipt after payment.
