Lounge access with your card depends on coverage, annual allowance and time limits. Four card examples, exceptions, steps and a checklist in this article.
Lounge access with a credit card depends on the type of card: if your card is part of a program like LoungeKey or has an airport agreement, entry is free or discounted; otherwise, there is no entitlement. The answer to how it works comes down to three things: the card's coverage, the number of annual entries, and the time limit. Below you'll find verified card examples, exceptions, and what to do at the door.
In brief
- Lounge entitlement depends on the type of card, its logo, and the program it belongs to; not every card guarantees entry.
- Annual allowance, guest number, and time limit vary by card; verify the terms of your own card.
- QNB Private requires no membership, but a temporary hold of 1.00 USD is placed on each entry.
- With Maximiles, the discount rate is 50% or 100% depending on the period, and it is reflected in transactions within the billing period.
- Plan your lounge exit time according to the gate closing time.
The essence of the rule: the card grants entitlement, not a guarantee of entry
Lounge access with a credit card works in one of two ways. The first is through an international lounge program the card belongs to; LoungeKey is an example of this. In this program, the card grants a certain number of free entries, usable at lounges within the program. The second is a direct agreement the bank has made with an airport operator or lounge brand. Arrangements at Primeclass and İGA lounges fall into this group. In this path, the entitlement may be free entry or a discount.
There are three common rules:
- Entitlement depends on the card's type and logo. Don't assume every card has lounge access; verify the coverage for your own card.
- The annual number of entries, guest entitlement, and time limit differ by card. Don't apply one card's figures to another card.
- Entry is confirmed at the door by staff using your card. Staff may also ask for your boarding pass.
The figures in this article apply only to the cards mentioned. If your card is not listed, check your bank's current lounge terms.
Differences by card: four examples
Paraf Premium
With the Mastercard-logo Paraf Premium card, under LoungeKey coverage, you can enter more than 1,800 lounges domestically and abroad, with one guest, 3 times a year for free. Independently of LoungeKey, with the TROY or Mastercard-logo Paraf Premium card, you can enter Primeclass Lounges at Ankara Esenboğa, İzmir Adnan Menderes, and Bodrum Milas airports with one guest, free of charge. This free use is limited to a maximum of 3 hours.
QNB Private
With the QNB Mastercard-logo Private card, under LoungeKey coverage, you can enter more than 850 lounges domestically and abroad, with guests, 15 times a year for free. If the 15 entries are exceeded, a charge of 32 USD per person applies.
Maximiles and Maximiles Black
At İGA lounges at Istanbul Airport, in both domestic and international departure areas, payment is made at the door with these cards. The discount is applied after the payment appears in the card's transactions within the billing period. The discount rate can be 50% or 100% and varies by period; that is, it does not mean free entry every period.
Garanti BBVA American Express Business and Corporate
With these cards, you can benefit from domestic lounges, such as the LGM Lounge at Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen, regardless of airline or ticket class. The condition is that the card must be active, with at least 1 transaction made in the last 3 months.
Exceptions and common mistakes
The issues that cause problems at lounge entry are generally the same. Review these before heading to the door.
- Logo and card type: In the Paraf Premium example, entitlement depends on specific conditions such as having a Mastercard-logo card or a TROY-logo card. Check which logo your card carries.
- Guests count toward the allowance: With QNB Private, the 15 entries are used together with guests. Confirm with your bank how your allowance decreases depending on how many people enter.
- Time limit: For Primeclass entry, free use is capped at 3 hours. If you exceed this during a long layover, you may be charged.
- Overage fee: With QNB Private, once the 15 entries are used up, a charge of 32 USD per person applies.
- Mistaking the hold for a charge: With QNB Private, to track entitlement, a separate temporary hold of 1.00 USD (or its TL equivalent) is placed on the card limit for each entry by the cardholder and guest. The hold is released within 5 business days at the latest.
- Assuming membership is required: With QNB Private, you do not need to open a membership via the website or app. It is enough to tell the staff you wish to enter under Lounge Key membership.
- Expecting the discount at the door: With Maximiles, payment is made at the door with these cards. The discount is applied after the payment appears in the card's transactions within the billing period.
- Inactive card: With Garanti BBVA American Express Business and Corporate, if there has been no transaction in the last 3 months, the card does not meet the condition.
Step by step: from entry to exit
Knowing your card's coverage isn't enough; following the right order saves time.
- Verify your card and entitlement. Find out the card's type, logo, and remaining annual entries from your bank's app or customer service.
- Check that the lounge is within coverage. A lounge included in LoungeKey and a lounge under a separate agreement are not the same thing. Determine in advance which lounge at your terminal your card is valid for.
- Plan your guests. Compare the number of people with you against your card's guest entitlement. Factor in that extra guests may incur a charge.
- Show your card and boarding pass at the door. Staff may also ask for ID. With QNB Private, tell the staff you wish to enter under Lounge Key membership.
- Track the hold and the discount. With QNB Private, expect the 1.00 USD hold shown on your card limit to be released within 5 business days at the latest. With Maximiles, expect the discount to appear in the card's transactions within the billing period.
- Watch the time. Remember the 3-hour limit for Paraf Premium's Primeclass entry and set your lounge exit time according to the gate closing time.
If you are charged, keep the receipt. If you have a payment dispute, apply to your bank with this receipt.
Time plan to avoid missing your flight
While the lounge can be an enjoyable break, the main goal is to reach your flight comfortably. Place your lounge visit after your check-in and security time allowances. If you have completed online check-in, you'll have your boarding pass in hand and won't lose time on this at the gate.
While at the lounge, keep track of your gate number and boarding time via the screen or the airline's app. Our editorial suggestion: set an alarm well before your flight time and calculate the walking time to the gate based on your own pace. In large airports, the distance within the terminal can be long.
During busy periods like public holidays and long weekends, lounges may fill up. If you are traveling abroad during the October 29 holiday, factor this possibility into your plan. When planning your flight, you can compare times and connection options on the search flight tickets page. Flights with long layovers make lounge entitlement more worthwhile, but entries with time limits, such as the 3-hour cap, require careful time management.
Checklist before heading out
Tick off these items before heading to the airport.
- Does my card's type and logo grant lounge entitlement?
- How many annual entries do I have left? Do my guests count against this number?
- Is the lounge at my destination airport included in my card's program or agreement?
- Is there a time limit? For example, free use at Primeclass entry is capped at 3 hours.
- Is there a fee if the entitlement is exceeded? With QNB Private, it's 32 USD per person after 15 entries.
- Is my card active? Garanti BBVA American Express Business and Corporate require at least 1 transaction in the last 3 months.
- Am I aware there may be a temporary hold on my limit? With QNB Private, a 1.00 USD (or TL equivalent) hold is released within 5 business days at the latest.
- If I use Maximiles, do I know the discount is reflected in transactions within the billing period and that the rate varies by period?
- Is my boarding pass ready, do I have my ID with me?
- Have I set my lounge exit time according to the gate closing time?
- If further information is needed, have I checked my airline's and bank's current rules?
If you do not have entitlement or it has run out, decide in advance whether you will pay separately for the lounge.
