Who can enter Turkish Airlines' international lounge, how guest rights work, and the difference between the two sections at Istanbul Airport.
The answer to who can enter the airport lounge is conditional: on a THY international flight, all Business Class passengers, Miles&Smiles Elite and Elite Plus members, Star Alliance Gold members, and Corporate Club cardholders can enter. Guest rights vary by card. This guide covers only THY's rules; other airlines may have separate conditions.
In short
- For the THY international lounge, you need a Business Class ticket or an eligible card; an economy ticket is not enough.
- Classic Plus only covers domestic lounges and does not grant international access.
- With a Gold card, you must travel on the same flight as your guest.
- A free domestic Business upgrade does not grant lounge access.
- These rules are verified for THY only; check the current rule for other airlines.
The core rule: who can enter
For passengers travelling with THY, international lounge access depends on ticket class or card. An economy ticket alone does not grant entry. The eligible groups are:
- All Business Class passengers travelling with THY
- Miles&Smiles Elite and Elite Plus members
- Star Alliance Gold members
- Corporate Club cardholders
Cardholders also have guest rights; details are in a separate section. Elite and Elite Plus members can use both domestic and international lounges for themselves on THY flights. Classic Plus members, however, can only use domestic lounges; this card alone is not sufficient for international flights.
This information has been verified only for Turkish Airlines. Separate rules may apply for Pegasus, AJet, İGA, and other airline or airport lounges. If you're flying with a different airline, check its current rules. If you want to clarify your class in advance, you can compare Business Class options on the flight search page.
Two sections at Istanbul Airport
The international lounge at Istanbul Airport has two sections. Which one you enter depends on your ticket class or card type.
Lounge Business
Business Class passengers enter this section regardless of card type. Even if you have an Elite Plus card, if you hold a Business Class ticket, this is where you'll be directed.
Lounge Miles&Smiles
Holders of the following cards enter this section:
- Elite Plus
- Elite
- SAG
- PLM
- CORP
- Miles&Smiles US Credit Card holders
In short, ticket class is decisive: Business ticket means Lounge Business, card means Lounge Miles&Smiles. Keep your boarding pass and membership card ready at entry; if you have a guest, make sure their boarding pass is on hand too.
This section division is verified for the international lounge at Istanbul Airport. The layout may differ at THY lounges in other airports; check your airline's current rules for the airport you're travelling through.
Guest rights: who can bring how many people
Guest rights vary by card. The verified rules are as follows:
- Elite and Elite Plus: 1 guest or family. Family coverage includes spouse and children under 25.
- Star Alliance Gold: 1 guest.
- Corporate Club: 1 guest.
- Business Class passenger without a card: A passenger who is a Star Alliance member flying Business Class on another airline and has no card has no guest rights.
Children over 25 enter for a fee. In other words, you cannot include an adult child under the family right; check your airline's current rules regarding the fee.
Elite and Elite Plus cardholders also have 1 guest right on Star Alliance flights. There is an additional requirement for Gold cardholders: following the Star Alliance rule change dated May 3, 2021, the Gold cardholder and their guest must travel on the same flight. If your friend is arriving on a separate flight, you cannot bring them in as a guest.
If you're travelling with one other person, first check which card grants which right. Having separate eligibility for both people is the safest way to avoid problems.
Exceptions and common mistakes
Problems at lounge entry usually come down to a few points.
Passengers with upgrades
Passengers who upgrade to Business Class on domestic flights cannot use the free lounge service. This restriction does not apply to passengers who upgrade to Business Class on international flights. Still, once your upgrade is confirmed, check the class on your boarding pass.
Common mistakes
- Trying to use the international lounge with Classic Plus. Classic Plus only covers domestic lounges.
- Bringing a Gold guest on a different flight. The Gold cardholder and guest must be on the same flight.
- A cardless Business passenger expecting a guest right. A passenger who is a Star Alliance member flying Business Class on another airline without a card has no guest rights.
- Overlooking a child's age. The family right covers children under 25; those over 25 enter for a fee.
- Applying THY's rules to every airline. Lounge conditions for Pegasus, AJet, and other airlines may differ and are not verified here.
If you're unsure about your entitlement, check your airline's current rules before heading to the airport. Finding out at the gate risks wasting time and missing your flight.
Step by step: using your lounge right
Follow this order to use your right:
- Check your ticket. Confirm the flight is with THY and verify your ticket class. If it's Business Class, no additional card is needed.
- Verify your card type. Check your Miles&Smiles account for Elite, Elite Plus, or Classic Plus status. Classic Plus is not sufficient for international flights.
- Determine your guest. Find out the guest right granted by your card. If travelling with a Gold card, make sure your guest is on the same flight.
- Clarify family coverage. For Elite and Elite Plus, spouse and children under 25 are covered.
- Complete check-in. Follow the steps in the how to do online check-in guide to get your boarding pass in advance; this is the first document requested at lounge entry.
- Go to the correct section. At Istanbul Airport, Business Class passengers enter Lounge Business, cardholders enter Lounge Miles&Smiles.
- Manage your time. Leave early enough before departure to account for gate number and walking time; staying at the lounge cannot be an excuse for missing your flight.
Checklist before you head out
Before going to the airport, check off these items:
- Is your flight with THY, or another airline? If another airline, check its current rules.
- Is your ticket Business Class? If so, no card is needed.
- Is your card Elite, Elite Plus, Star Alliance Gold, or Corporate Club? Classic Plus is not enough for international flights.
- How many people does your guest right cover? 1 guest for Gold and Corporate Club, 1 guest or family for Elite and Elite Plus.
- If travelling with Gold, is your guest on the same flight?
- Are your family members a spouse or children under 25?
- If you upgraded, was it domestic or international? A domestic upgrade does not grant free lounge access.
- Is online check-in complete, is your boarding pass on your phone?
- Do you have your card and ID with you?
During busy holiday periods, time spent at the airport increases. If you're looking at international routes for the October 29 holiday, factor lounge use into your plan and arrive at the airport earlier than usual.
